and one more question. Why don't folks just put an air scoop over the filter in a short ram air setup to feed it cold air? Would that be the same as a CAI coming from the grill or under the fender? Is the reason it's not usually done an esthetic one?

Sure you could mount a scoop but there has been a lot of research on scoops now and flush mounted right on the hood opening is not the best way to do it. Air stays stagnate close to the hood so the best thing is having the opening at least an inch raised off the hood or more so for the best results they can get quite large.

Yes you can used PVC under hood for intakes it shouldn't melt BUT it would need more support along the way than metal because it is more effected by vibration and could crack if it isn't supported or braced more than the same length of metal.

Even the metal ones aren't too expensive if you have a muffler shop near you or even order online a section with a 90 degree bend that you cut with a hacksaw to the right shape aren't too bad.

thanks for your answers, very helpful. Did you see my question about the little breather filter. SID on the other site has a Sid's Short Ram intake that has a little breather filter on. What's that for, and why do you not use one, or did I miss it in your write up.

Yep those little breather don't do much unless your car is forced induction of some type all the breather does is equalize pressure in the crank.
