Default DIY Rear Wheel Spats

I saw this idea discussed at Ecomodder in regards to fuel savings through aerodynamics. I thought I'd give it a try. I first took a piece of cardstock to make a template.

Then I used that pattern to cut out a piece from a sheet of 3/16" ABS plastic that I had laying around.

I used a heat gun to bend the plastic to conform to the shape that I desired.

I used 1/2" sheet metal screws to secure them in place.

After using these for close to ~1400 miles, I am seeing a small 0.5 mpg increase. Regardless, that's good for about 6 extra miles per tank!

Looks pretty good and not too hard to do. What are these made to do deflect air away from the tire?

Looks like I could just extend my mystery mod

And the best part is no more busted knuckles when washing the car.
